From celery fields to college town
Settlers founded the Lake Jesup Settlement about a mile southeast of the lake in 1875. Citrus and celery drove the economy through the 1940s, helped by Henry Foster's rail and steamboat shipping. Recent growth is tied to the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Research Park. The chickens that once roamed downtown have disappeared as the city grew.
